An ancient icon depicting the Ascension of Saint Onuphrius was found in a church in the Carpathian region
During a scientific expedition to the church of the Pogin Monastery in the Carpathian region, an ancient icon depicting “The Assumption (Ascension) of Saint Onuphrius” was discovered; its existence had not been previously known. Dr. Nadi Babiy, a scholar of art history, reported this.
The discovery was made while preparing a research book titled “Pogonia,” dedicated to the history of the monastery. The researchers climbed up to the late 18th-century altar and removed a cartouche bearing a prayer inscription, beneath which they uncovered the hidden icon in the presence of the clergy. According to the researcher, archival visitation records confirm that the discovered icon is part of an ancient altar complex dedicated to Saint Onuphrius.
A group of researchers worked for about a year on the publication about the Poginsky Monastery of the Dormition of the Mother of God. The book includes a description of the unique 16th–17th-century libraries, the layout of all the altars, and the history of the monastery up until its dissolution and burning by the Soviet authorities in the 20th century.
