At the Ukraine Hotel, traces of shelling were replaced with children’s Petrykivka-style paintings
The plywood panels covering the windows of the “Ukraine” Hotel in Kyiv, which were damaged by Russian shelling, have been transformed into works of art. Instead of gray panels, the building has been decorated with children’s drawings created using the Petrykivka painting technique.
Olena Zagura, the operations director of the “Ukraine” Hotel, explained that they decided to turn the plywood covering the windows—which had been shattered by the shelling—into a temporary work of art to bring some beauty into the lives of Kyiv residents amid the air raid alerts.
“It takes some time to manufacture new window frames. So while we’re waiting for materials to arrive and for the craftsmen to complete the removal and installation work, we decided to create something interesting and inspiring for Kyiv residents, so they can see beauty and understand that Ukrainians are unbreakable,” said Olena Zagura.

It takes the girl about a week to create a single art panel measuring two by three meters. She chose the technique herself and developed sketches for two windows. This was the first time Lyubava had painted on wood of this size.
“I’ve been drawing since I was a child. I started drawing flowers later, when I began attending the ‘Dyvotsvit’ art club. That’s when I really fell in love with drawing flowers,” the young artist shared. The girl adds that she dreams of becoming an engineer in the future, and that painting is simply her hobby. Everyone in her family is creative, so her sister also plans to join in painting the windows later on.
Eventually, the paintings will be replaced with new windows, but the children’s artwork will definitely be preserved—it will decorate the interior of the “Ukraine” hotel, according to Suspilne.
