51st Toronto Film Festival opens in Canada
The 51st TIFF International Film Festival opens in Toronto, Canada, with a program featuring more than 200 films. John Malkovich, Penélope Cruz, Chris Rock and Lisa of Blackpink are expected to attend screenings and red-carpet events. The festival will run until September 20, Asharq Al-Awsat reports.
World premieres
The opening film will be the biographical drama “Being Heumann” by Sian Heder, an Oscar winner and the director of “CODA.” The film tells the story of American activist Judy Heumann, who fought for the rights of people with disabilities. Ruth Madeley stars in the lead role, while Mark Ruffalo also appears in the film.
Toronto will host the world premiere of Peter Farrelly’s “I Play Rocky.” The film tells how the then little-known Sylvester Stallone stood up to Hollywood to bring a film to the screen and play the role that changed his life. Young Stallone is played by Anthony Ippolito.
Another biographical film in the program will be “Villeneuve: The Rise of a Legend,” about Canadian racing driver Gilles Villeneuve — from his modest beginnings in Quebec to the pinnacle of Formula 1.

New works by directors
Comedian Chris Rock will present the Hollywood satire “Misty Green,” marking his return to screenwriting and directing. The protagonist is an actress going through a difficult period and looking for a second chance. The film stars Rosalind Eleazar, Daniel Kaluuya, Adam Driver, Anna Kendrick and Rock himself.
Martin McDonagh’s “Wild Horse Nine,” about two CIA agents on Easter Island during the final tense days of Salvador Allende’s rule in Chile, is included in the program. The film has already been shown in Venice and Telluride; lead actors John Malkovich and Sam Rockwell are expected in Toronto.
Helen Mirren will present the psychological thriller “The Talent to Kill,” in which she plays writer Patricia Highsmith. Zack Snyder will show “The Last Photograph,” combining action and drama, starring Stuart Martin and Fra Fee. The thriller “The Bunker,” featuring Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz, and Werner Herzog’s new work “Bucking Fastard” will arrive in Toronto from the Venice festival.
In the documentary program, Lisa will present “Always Lalisa,” about the beginning of her solo career and her first steps in acting in the series “The White Lotus.”
