David Shrigley's works will be exhibited in London alongside those of the Old Masters

In 2027, London’s Dulwich Picture Gallery will present a solo exhibition by British artist David Shrigley, where his new works will be displayed alongside paintings by 17th-century Dutch and Flemish masters. The exhibition will run from May 25 to September 5, 2027, according to The Guardian.

Shrigley will create new, previously unseen works in response to paintings from the gallery’s collection. The exhibition will feature paintings by Jan Steen, Adriaen Brouwer, David Teniers the Younger, Adriaen van Ostade, Pieter Bruegel the Younger, and Rembrandt van Rijn. Some of the works will also be provided by major British cultural institutions.

The Dulwich Picture Gallery stated that the exhibition will explore the comic side of historical painting and show how artists from different eras used humor to observe everyday life, human behavior, and social interactions. This will be Shrigley’s first solo exhibition at a public art museum in the United Kingdom since his retrospective at London’s Hayward Gallery in 2012.

Helen Gillard, the gallery’s head of collections and exhibitions, stated that Shrigley, like 17th-century artists, knows how to find the funny in everyday life. According to her, the artist can restore a sense of playfulness to the old masters and remind us that great art doesn’t always have to be serious.

David Shrigley is an artist, illustrator, writer, filmmaker, and sculptor who has been nominated for the Turner Prize. He is known for his distinctive line drawings and humorous works. Among his recent installations are the 2021 Mayfair Tennis Ball Exchange, for which the gallery space was filled with new tennis balls, and the 2025 Exhibition of Old Rope: an installation consisting of 10 metric tons of used and discarded rope, priced at 1 million pounds sterling.
