In Lviv, a graduate took to the dance floor for the waltz despite her illness and her parents' objections

In Lviv, graduate Sofia Radysh, who had been homeschooled due to a serious illness, was able to attend her graduation and dance the waltz, despite initial resistance from some parents. In the end, her classmates, teachers, and family supported her dream.

The story of the graduation at Lviv School No. 13 turned from a conflict into a poignant moment that will be remembered by all participants for a long time, as graduate Sofia Radish, who had been homeschooled on an individualized curriculum due to serious health issues, was still able to attend the ceremony and dance her farewell waltz.

According to the girl’s mother, Natalia Radish, the idea of Sofia participating in the celebrations initially met with resistance from some members of the parent committee, who spoke at a meeting about organizational difficulties and potential risks related to the girl’s health, making the situation seem almost hopeless at one point. “When I explained that Sofia has a musculoskeletal disorder and breathes with the help of a ventilator, someone said, ‘All the more reason! How do you even imagine her going to the prom?’” recalls the graduate’s mother, describing the difficult conversation during preparations for the event.

Despite this, the story took a completely different turn when one of the girl’s classmates learned about the situation and volunteered to be her partner for the prom waltz. After that, the dance teachers, school administration, and the entire teaching staff joined the preparations, working together to ensure the celebration would take place after all.

The graduation ceremony took place on May 30, and it was there that Sofia was able not only to receive congratulations from teachers and friends but also to take the floor with her partner to dance the very waltz that had become a symbol of the end of her school years. Since the main venue for the graduation party was not fully adapted to the girl’s needs, the family organized a separate celebration at an inclusive restaurant in Lviv, where about fifty relatives and friends were able to gather, creating a warm, barrier-free atmosphere for the graduate.

Sofia’s mother emphasized that she decided to share this story publicly not only as a personal experience but also as a reminder of how important it is in Ukrainian society to talk about inclusion, accessibility, and every child’s right to meaningful school memories, regardless of their health condition. This is known from a post by the girl’s mother, Natalia Radysh.

We previously reported that the recent discovery of two skeletons, mutilated in the same manner, suggests that limb amputation was used as a punishment during the Eastern Zhou Dynasty in China, over 2,000 years ago.

We also recall that during excavations in the ancient city of Laodicea in the Turkish province of Denizli, which is included on UNESCO’s tentative list of World Heritage Sites, a statue of Asclepius, the god of medicine in Greek and Roman mythology, and the head of a statue of his daughter Hygieia were discovered.
