In Nigeria, review rates A Mama Deola Wedding Story 5 out of 10
Nigerian film A Mama Deola Wedding Story, based on the popular comedy character Mama Deola, received a score of 5 out of 10 in a Premium Times Nigeria review. Reviewer Emmanuel Muna believes that the character’s humor, which worked in short social media videos, does not fully sustain a feature-length format.
Plot of the wedding comedy
The film was directed by Femi Adebayo and produced by Folagade Banks, who also played Mama Deola. The film became the first original production of the Kava platform and is available to watch on Kava TV. The story focuses on preparations for the wedding of Femi, played by Rotimi Salami, and his fiancée, played by Omowunmi Dada.
Mama Deola seeks to finance and organize a lavish wedding for her son. She takes control of the preparations, trying to prevent the bride’s family from humiliating her son or considering her family to be of lower status. Meanwhile, the future spouses face misunderstandings related to Femi’s past, while the bride’s mother, Mrs. Rochelle, does not support the marriage because of the difference in the families’ social status.

Remarks on character development
According to the review’s author, Mama Deola often remains predictable: the film repeats the heroine’s familiar traits rather than developing her for a feature-length film. As a result, the film sometimes resembles a series of sketches connected by a wedding story.
The reviewer also noted that the central couple’s relationship is pushed into the background compared with the events surrounding Mama Deola. The film also stars Shaffy Bello, Toyin Abraham, Bukky Wright, Idowu Phillips, Akin Lewis and Erica Nlewedim. The review notes the ambition of attempting to bring a popular character from social media into feature-length cinema, but points to a lack of structure and meaningful roles for part of the cast.
