Work by Italian and Korean artists presented in Seoul
The Italian Embassy in Seoul held the “Italy at Frieze” event as part of Frieze Seoul. The event was dedicated to “The Golden Trace,” which brings together Italian artist Andrea Francolino and Korean artist Yi Sookyung. The event took place at the residence of the Italian ambassador in Seoul’s Hannam-dong district.
The event was organized together with the Italian Cultural Institute in Seoul. Italy’s ambassador to Korea, Emilia Gatto, said that contemporary art can strengthen cultural dialogue between Italy and Korea. She also emphasized Italy’s capacity for innovation and experimentation alongside its historical heritage, The Korea Herald reports.
Cracks, fragments and gold
Italian-French curator Valentina Buzzi curated “The Golden Trace.” The work was organized in cooperation with the Mazzoleni and Massimodecarlo galleries. It explores cracks, fragments and gold as symbols of transformation, reconstruction and renewal.

Andrea Francolino is an interdisciplinary artist from Milan who uses broken materials to reflect on destruction and rebirth.
The “Translated Vase” series
Seoul-born Yi Sookyung is known for her “Translated Vase” series. In it, she transforms discarded fragments of traditional Korean ceramics into sculptural forms joined with 24-karat gold leaf.
During the event, Gatto also awarded Bvlgari Korea CEO Sean Lee the title of Knight of the Order of the Star of Italy. The honor was awarded for his contribution to cultural and economic ties between Italy and Korea, as well as for promoting Italian culture in the country.
