Exhibition featuring works by Chagall, Hockney and Kusama opens in Seoul
In Seoul, South Korea, the Global Sae-A Art Space exhibition venue has opened the exhibition “Highlights of Modern Painting: Portraits of an Era,” featuring 20 works by 14 artists. The exhibition at the Global Sae-A Group headquarters in the Gangnam district will run from September 15 to January 9, The Korea Herald reports.
Three sections of the exhibition
The project encompasses surrealism, postwar abstraction and figurative painting of recent years. The first section, “A Walk Through Dreams,” brings together works by Belgian surrealist Paul Delvaux and Marc Chagall. Both artists explored themes of dreams and the unconscious in the shadow of the world wars.
The “Enigmatic Abstraction” section features Willem de Kooning, Yayoi Kusama, Lynne Drexler, as well as contemporary artists Peter Halley and Marina Perez Simão. The selection traces the development of the genre from abstract expressionism to contemporary interpretations.

The return of the figure
The final section, “The Return of the Figure,” is dedicated to works by David Hockney, Salvo, Nicolas Party, Hilary Pecis, Jonathan Gardner, Adrian Ghenie and George Condo. In these works, people and objects are at the center of the canvas, while the artists draw on earlier artistic movements.
The exhibition was curated by Park Mi-hwa, who previously worked as a senior curator at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea. According to the publication, the exhibition opened several months after the deaths of two of its participants: Hockney died in June at the age of 88, and Kusama died in August at the age of 97.
The exhibition venue opened in July 2022 under the name S2A with the support of Global Sae-A Chairman Kim Woong-ki. Its first exhibition featured 40 works by Kusama and was then described as the artist’s largest exhibition in Korea.
