Vaba Lava seeks €250,000 to avoid closing its venue in Narva — ERR News
Independent Estonian theater Vaba Lava is considering closing its venue in Narva, Estonia, due to a lack of state funding. To continue operating, the theater needs at least an additional €250,000 in state support, ERR News reports.
Vaba Lava receives more than €300,000 per year from the state for theatrical activities, but its management considers this amount insufficient for stable operations and Estonian-language productions in Narva. In the border city, where Russian is predominantly spoken, productions require translation, careful repertoire selection and substantially lower ticket prices. The theater also cites high district heating costs, which are the highest in Estonia.
The theater management's position
Vaba Lava founder and director Märt Meos said that the theater is described as needed and as doing important work, but this is not accompanied by adequate support. According to him, at the current level of funding, he cannot undertake a five-year contractual commitment.

The lease term for Vaba Lava's premises in Narva ends next year, but a decision on its extension must be made this autumn. Meos noted that the theater must plan its activities one to two years ahead and currently does not know whether it will be operating in Narva on August 1, 2027.
The decision depends on the budget
Estonia's Ministry of Culture recognizes the importance of Vaba Lava's presence in the country's third-largest city, which has no state theater. A joint fund with the state had previously been planned, but this idea was not implemented, so Vaba Lava is forced to compete for operating grants.
Marje Anette Heinsalu, an adviser at the ministry's arts department, said that the amount of grant funding could increase if the application receives a higher score or if the number of recipients decreases. At the same time, additional funds for the theater would require a political decision. According to her, the possibility of finding funding for the Narva theater through other mechanisms will depend on the outcome of negotiations on Estonia's 2027 state budget.
