The Grigory Veryovka National Honored Academic Ukrainian Folk Choir unveiled its new stage costumes. Their debut sparked lively discussions and debates among Ukrainians on the social media platform Threads.

The Veriovka Choir performed at the “National Legend of Ukraine” ceremony in their new costumes. The female vocalists wore white dresses with red aprons, necklaces, and headbands of the same color. The male singers appeared on stage in white shirts with embroidery on the chest and black pants.

“The women’s dresses and men’s shirts were made using the ‘white-on-white’ technique, known as Reshetylivka embroidery—one of the most complex techniques, originating from the town of Reshetylivka in the Poltava region. The dresses feature an ornament from Bukovina, while the men’s shirts showcase an interpretation of embroidery from the village of Netreba in the Rivne region, while the women’s aprons reimagine traditional Pokutia motifs, specifically those from Horodenka and Zalishchyky. “Ornaments and embroidery techniques from different regions are combined into a single stage costume, and traditional motifs are unified by a common logic of cut, color, and silhouette,” reads a post on the choir’s page.

The group also noted that work on the choir’s stage look is ongoing. So, we can expect new changes in the artists’ stage appearances.

On Threads, Ukrainians shared their thoughts on the singers’ new costumes and had mixed opinions. For some commenters, the costumes look colorful, minimalist, elegant, and sophisticated:

“Luxurious outfits. Very elegant and tasteful. The stylist did an excellent job.”

For some, the new costumes brought to mind the image of Kateryna from Taras Shevchenko’s poetry. Others emphasized that the new looks are better than the old ones, pointing to the choir’s previous costumes.

“I looked at them for a long time, zoomed in, and couldn’t figure out what the author found ‘wrong.’ Their look reminded me of Shevchenko’s Kateryna.”

However, there are other opinions as well; some users believe the costumes look bad and a bit cheap. At the same time, critics pointed out that the female vocalists are missing plachta skirts, and the male singers are missing red sashes:

“I won’t presume to judge whether this is good or bad; overall, it doesn’t look terrible, but it’s a bit off—but why do the women have warm white, while the men have cool white?”

Among the comments, particularly on the Veriovka Choir’s Instagram and Facebook pages, some users gave the artists’ new looks a thumbs-up.

“Girls, you look so beautiful in these outfits! Finally, we can see you, not just the props.”

“In addition to their divine voices, they have incredibly beautiful costumes! A treasure!”
