Analyst forecasts China’s dominance in nuclear energy by 2035 — OilPrice
China may become the world’s largest producer of nuclear energy over the next decade, surpassing France and the United States. OilPrice reports, citing an assessment by Damien Ma, head of energy research at Gavekal Technologies.
According to Ma’s assessment, through 2035 China will have the world’s most dynamic and significant nuclear sector. He links the pace of development to construction efficiency: in China, a new nuclear power plant can be built in about six years, whereas construction of the newest Vogtle reactors in the United States took more than ten years.
Expansion of nuclear capacity
Over the past decade, China added 34 gigawatts of nuclear capacity. During this period, the United States built only one new nuclear power plant — Plant Vogtle in Georgia, whose construction was delayed and exceeded the planned budget.

The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) noted that China’s latest five-year plan considers nuclear energy in the context of energy security, technological innovation and international engagement. Beijing is also developing technologies for reactor design, deployment and fuel supply.
Agreement with the IAEA
China concluded an agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency that provides for cooperation and knowledge exchange on high-temperature gas-cooled reactors (HTGRs). The document covers research and development, design, construction, reactor commissioning and operation, as well as the exchange of information on supply chains and personnel training.
Such reactors are advanced nuclear technologies and can provide high-temperature heat for industrial needs. The article also notes that growing electricity demand, including due to the development of artificial intelligence, is increasing interest in systems capable of continuously supplying electricity and industrial heat.
