At least three energy projects under assessment in Queensland — ABC News Australia
In the Australian state of Queensland, authorities are using special powers to assess at least three renewable energy projects. These include the Bouldercombe energy storage system near Rockhampton, as well as Marmadua Energy Park and Middle Creek Energy Hub in the Western Downs region, ABC News Australia reports.
The procedure is being used after the Queensland government cancelled the Moonlight Range wind farm project in the central part of the state in May 2025. Representatives of the renewable energy industry believe that more active government intervention could increase uncertainty for investors and local communities.
Concerns of investors and communities
Renewable Energy Alliance national director Andrew Bray said that the use of exceptional powers could become an obstacle to investment in energy projects. According to him, communities and investors need greater clarity on the approval process for major energy facilities. Bray noted that once a permit is granted, a project should be implemented, while in the event of a refusal, the parties should be able to move on to other options.

Queensland University of Technology associate professor John Mickel said that projects taken up by the minister for special consideration have often already passed complex local, state or federal approval procedures. In his view, uncertainty during the implementation of major investments increases project risks and the cost of raising capital.
Debate over Tarong West
National Party federal MP David Littleproud called on the state government to intervene in the A$1.5 billion Tarong West wind farm project, which has already received federal approval. The project is planned for the South Burnett region. Littleproud cited community concerns about a workers' camp and the project itself.
At the same time, Queensland Treasurer and Energy Minister David Janetzki said that the government supports private renewable energy projects. According to him, the state's energy plan provides for a balance between coal, gas and private investment in wind and solar generation. The two projects in Western Downs are located in the same region where the A$32 billion Western Downs Digital Park data centre has been proposed near the town of Dalby.
