Mteto Nyati to remain Eskom board chair for another three years in South Africa — Daily Maverick

In South Africa, Electricity and Energy Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa said that Mteto Nyati will remain chair of the board of national power company Eskom for another three years. This comes amid the introduction of a new retail tariff structure that separates fixed charges from payments for electricity actually consumed.

As Daily Maverick reports, Ramokgopa called leadership continuity important for the next stage of Eskom's transformation. According to him, the new tariff model should separately show the cost of electricity generation, transmission through the main grid, distribution and related services.

New components of the bill

Ramokgopa said that about 1–1.5% of electricity bills currently goes toward covering unpaid bills of consumers and municipalities. The minister opposes including such losses in tariffs for those who pay their bills. He also proposes setting legislative limits on technical electricity losses related to the poor condition of networks, so that power companies repair infrastructure rather than pass these costs on to consumers.

Nyati believes that opening the market to private competition will help reduce prices. He also said that splitting Eskom into separate operating units could reduce costs, and that the company seeks to secure its share of the renewable energy market.

Compensation for Eskom

In December 2025, the Pretoria High Court sent back for recalculation the previous valuation of Eskom's power station and grid assets used by South Africa's National Energy Regulator, Nersa. After that, the regulator approved an additional 54.734 billion rand for Eskom, spreading its recovery over several years.

In the 2026/27 financial year, 12 billion rand will be added to tariffs, increasing the planned price rise from 5.36% to 8.76%. In 2027/28, another 23.013 billion rand is envisaged: the tariff for Eskom's direct customers is to rise by 8.83%, and for municipalities by 8.84%. The remaining 19.721 billion rand was deferred until after 2028 so that the current tariff increases do not exceed single-digit figures.

Eskom also plans, under special agreements, to take over billing and payment collection in troubled municipalities. The company intends to install smart meters to isolate illegal connections and increase the collection rate for electricity payments.
