Nigeria prepares power system reform and grid expansion — Premium Times Nigeria

Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, said in Abuja that the federal government is moving from the initial stabilization of the power sector to infrastructure reforms, attracting investment and expanding the national grid. He announced the plans on September 22 during an event marking his first 100 days in office, Premium Times Nigeria reports.

Four areas of work

According to Tegbe, during the first 100 days the ministry focused on stabilizing the existing system, restoring idle generation capacity, and strengthening commercial and governance foundations to attract sustainable investment.

The next stage, he said, envisages deeper grid stabilization, the development of the Transmission Super Grid, more efficient use of existing assets and preparation for future electricity demand. The minister also named the development of distribution networks, meter installation, transparency and the involvement of state governments in electricity generation as priorities. They are to be encouraged to develop their own generation in order to reduce the burden on the national grid.

Agreements with Chinese companies

Tegbe said that during an energy mission to China, companies and financial institutions committed to accelerating priority projects according to set schedules. In particular, CMEC confirmed its participation in the 1.9 GW Presidential Power Initiative; the first transmission lines under the initiative are to be delivered in the first quarter of 2027.

According to the minister, CNEEC advanced financial arrangements for the $116 million Zungeru power evacuation project, with financing approval expected by the end of the year. TBEA announced its intention to establish a $500 million industrial park for the production of power equipment. HengFei Cables, he said, is to supply cables for the second phase of the Presidential Power Initiative and proposed establishing a cable assembly facility and training center in Nigeria.

The ministry is also conducting technical audits along the Lagos and Abuja transmission corridors. The Lagos, Enugu–Port Harcourt and Abuja–Kaduna–Kano corridors were included in the grid stabilization program. Separately, the government signed a cooperation agreement with Huawei Technologies on grid digitalization, loss reduction, assessing gaps in the SCADA dispatch control system and technical training for specialists.
