Deloitte senior partner Eshun urged Ghana to develop oil sector
Deloitte Africa senior partner Joe Eshun said that Ghana should seize new opportunities in the oil and gas sector for industrialization, economic development, and job creation. His comments came after the signing of a memorandum of understanding with Shell Holdings Limited, Chevron Sub-Saharan Africa Ventures Ltd., and GNPC Exploration and Production Limited on the development of exploration and production rights in the South Deepwater Tano Cape Three Points block.
MyJoyOnline reports. Eshun spoke on the sidelines of the Africa Oil Week Energy Conference in Accra, where he moderated the plenary session, “Investing in Talent: Building Africa’s Energy Workforce Capacity.”
Potential of partnerships
According to Eshun, the agreements with Shell and Chevron could expand Ghana’s presence in the oil and gas industry. He believes the country has an opportunity to increase oil and gas production fourfold and become a major player in the sector within the next four to five years.

The Deloitte Africa representative stressed the importance of cooperation with international companies. According to him, capital and innovation are needed to develop the industry, while local energy production should be developed with the involvement of national specialists and organizations.
Energy workforce
Eshun called the development of a qualified local workforce necessary to support future exploration and production operations. In his view, major investment in the sector could promote industrialization and create jobs for young people.
He also urged industry representatives to share their experience with educational institutions in order to develop practical training programs and narrow the gap between education and the real needs of the labor market.
