Venezuela produces about 1.2 million barrels of oil per day — The Rio Times
Venezuela’s total oil production stands at about 1.2 million barrels per day, while the United States imported 630,000 barrels of Venezuelan oil per day in June 2026. Claims that the United States receives millions of barrels from Venezuela every day are not supported by available figures, The Rio Times reports.
Venezuela’s total production
According to OPEC secondary sources, Venezuela produced 1.031 million barrels per day in April 2026. PDVSA reported a figure of 1.136 million barrels per day. As the publication notes, the difference is related to the methodology for accounting for natural gas liquids and condensate.
US Deputy Energy Secretary Kyle Haustweit estimated the country’s total production at approximately 1.25 million barrels per day in August. Venezuelan exports amounted to about 1.17 million barrels per day in August. These figures concern all production and all supply destinations, not only the US market.
Supplies to the United States
According to monthly statistics from the US Energy Information Administration, imports of Venezuelan oil to the United States reached 630,000 barrels per day in June 2026. This was the latest available monthly figure at the time the article was published. In January, it stood at 200,000 barrels per day; in February, 231,000; in March, 373,000; in April, 429,000; and in May, 471,000.

For comparison, in July 2025, the United States imported 7,000 barrels of Venezuelan oil per day, and in December, 137,000 barrels. Haustweit described the flow as more than 500,000 barrels per day, or slightly more than 40% of Venezuela’s total production.
Checking the wording
The Rio Times was unable to confirm that US President Donald Trump used wording referring specifically to millions of barrels per day. The closest documented statement, made by him on August 5, 2026, in Las Vegas, concerned Venezuela’s billions of barrels of oil and, according to the publication’s assessment, referred to reserves rather than the daily production volume.
According to The Rio Times’ calculations, an assumption of at least 3 million barrels per day overstates Venezuela’s total production by about four times and supplies to the United States by eight to ten times.
