Ripple integrates RLUSD into Mastercard for faster card payments

Ripple has joined forces with Mastercard, WebBank, and crypto exchange Gemini to test the use of the RLUSD stablecoin based on the XRP Ledger for credit card payments. This project was presented at Swell 2025 and could be one of the first instances of a regulated US bank using a public blockchain and stablecoin to process fiat payments. RLUSD, which is backed by the US dollar and has a circulation of over $1 billion, is regulated in accordance with New York requirements.

As part of a pilot project, WebBank, the issuer of the Gemini credit card, will consider the possibility of settling Mastercard transactions using RLUSD on the XRP Ledger. If the initiative is implemented, it could become a model for the further introduction of stable currencies on public blockchains. The implementation of RLUSD is planned for the coming months, subject to regulatory approvals. If successful, the project could significantly improve transaction speed and cost by replacing slow traditional settlement methods.
