What is known about the effectiveness of pimple patches — ABC News Australia
In Australia, hydrocolloid pimple patches may be useful for isolated superficial breakouts with a visible white or yellow head, but scientific evidence of their effectiveness remains limited. This is reported by ABC News Australia, citing a review of studies and data from small trials.
These patches are based on hydrocolloid, a gel-like material that has been used for wound care for decades. It absorbs and retains moisture while the skin heals. On a superficial pimple, the patch can absorb fluid, sebum and dead cells, causing it to turn white or cloudy.
Study results
A 2025 review found that most evidence on hydrocolloid dressings concerns wound treatment rather than pimples. Studies of acne patches were often small, funded by manufacturers and not always conducted using a blinded method, in which participants, researchers or both parties know which product is being used.
In one manufacturer-funded study involving 41 people, the patch improved the appearance of a pimple within a day if the breakout already had a head and had been squeezed. Another small study involving 37 people showed that after two days, pimples under patches were 35% smaller and appeared 44% less inflamed according to a combined visual assessment of size and redness. By the tenth day, post-inflammatory pigmentation occurred less often on treated pimples.

Who may not benefit from patches
Patches work best on superficial breakouts because they cannot affect inflammation located deep in the skin. They are therefore less effective for deep and painful cystic pimples. At the same time, they create a physical barrier that may prevent a person from touching, picking at or squeezing a breakout.
For people with sensitive skin or allergies to adhesive materials, such products may cause redness, itching or a rash. Medicated patches containing components such as salicylic acid may also cause irritation. They are advised to be applied to clean, dry skin for six to eight hours or overnight and replaced when the patch swells or becomes cloudy.
If breakouts do not clear after several weeks of care, are deep, painful or leave scars, a doctor should be consulted. If necessary, they may refer the patient to a dermatologist.
