Cyprus AI strategy names healthcare a priority — Cyprus Mail

Cyprus’s new national strategy in the field of artificial intelligence identifies healthcare as one of the priority sectors and envisages raising the level of AI adoption to 75% by 2032. This is stated in a Cyprus Mail column by naturopath Dina Gavarieva.

According to the data cited in the article, 9.3% of Cypriot companies used AI last year, while the EU average was about 20%. At the same time, nearly half of Cyprus residents used generative artificial intelligence tools during the year.

Chatbots and medical data

The author notes that people are increasingly turning to chatbots for information about symptoms, test results, nutrition, or weight management. According to her, about one-third of adults regularly use AI chatbots to search for health information, and this figure is higher among younger people.

Hospitals and clinics are also integrating AI tools to check symptoms, track treatment outcomes, automate scheduling, logistics, and administrative tasks. The article states that diagnostic software is already being used to analyse medical images and detect early signs of disease.

The doctor’s role

Smartwatches, smart rings, and continuous glucose monitoring systems collect data on sleep, heart rate, and metabolic indicators. AI can interpret such data, detect changes, and suggest adjustments to users’ everyday habits. Such tools can also create personalised menus taking into account goals, allergies, cultural preferences, and available products.

At the same time, Gavarieva warns that AI can provide either a correct or an incorrect answer with equal confidence. She considers such tools a useful first step in searching for information, but not a replacement for a specialist who knows the patient’s history, conducts an examination, and is responsible for medical decisions.
