In Lviv, doctors removed a 4.5-kg uterine fibroid from a 50-year-old patient
Gynecologists in Lviv performed a complex surgery and removed a 4.5-kg uterine fibroid from a 50-year-old woman. Due to the large size of the tumor, the standard surgical incision had to be significantly enlarged.
At the Lviv National Medical University Hospital, gynecologists removed a 4.5 kg uterine fibroid from a resident of the Lviv region. To do so, they had to significantly enlarge the surgical incision because the tumor could not be removed through the standard incision. They had to act as quickly as possible because the patient was experiencing severe bleeding.
The woman was admitted to the hospital in serious condition. She was experiencing heavy bleeding and severe anemia, and the large fibroid was compressing her internal organs, particularly her bladder. Preparation for the surgery took over a week: due to her low hemoglobin level (68 g/L), the woman had to be given iron supplements.
The woman admitted that she had put off seeing a doctor for a very long time out of fear of surgery. This led to the progression of her condition and made the procedure significantly more complicated.
In preparation for the surgery, the gynecologists stocked up on blood components, as there was a high risk of massive bleeding during the procedure. During the surgery, the woman received a blood transfusion (transfusion of blood and its components).
“Heavy bleeding began right at the start of the procedure. We needed to remove the tumor very quickly, but its size and weight were so great that we couldn’t do it through a standard incision. We enlarged the surgical access, but even that did not simplify the procedure. The tumor had to be removed as quickly and safely as possible,” says gynecologist Ihor Filipiuk.
Despite all the challenges, the surgery was a success. The 4.5-kilogram fibroid was removed, and the patient has already returned home.
Doctors advise women not to make life harder for themselves and to seek medical help in a timely manner. In many cases, small myomatous nodules can be removed using a minimally invasive laparoscopic method while preserving reproductive function.
