Doctors at St. Nicholas Children’s Hospital in Lviv helped an infant with a severe form of epilepsy byputting her on a special ketogenic diet. After several months of treatment, the seizures stopped completely.
Daryna, from Stryi, was born prematurely—at 28 weeks of gestation. After birth, the girl was diagnosed with a severe form of epilepsy. Anticonvulsant medications and hormone therapy did not produce the desired results, so the doctors suggested an alternative treatment method—the classic ketogenic diet.
When the child was four months old, she was put on a special diet that relies on fats as the brain’s primary source of energy. Throughout the treatment, doctors continuously monitored the girl’s condition and adjusted her diet.
After four months, the seizures had completely disappeared. According to the doctors, Daryna’s cognitive and physical development has also improved—she has become more active, started communicating with those around her, and is mastering new motor skills. The girl has now been seizure-free for over half a year.
Doctors saved a 28-year-old mother after she suffered from severe pneumonia.
