Thai brand Sudtana products are used at Four Seasons and Six Senses

Products by the Thai skincare, haircare and bodycare brand Sudtana are used at Four Seasons Bangkok, Six Senses Samui and Soneva establishments. Channel NewsAsia reports on the brand’s history.

Sudtana was founded in 2019 by Manusanan “Mew” Leelahongjutha together with her two brothers, who now advise the business. Leelahongjutha earned an MBA from the MIT Sloan School of Management on a Fulbright scholarship and now leads a company of 20 employees, overseeing product development, brand strategy and international expansion.

Family recipes and formulas

According to the founder, the brand draws inspiration from herbal remedy recipes passed down by her late grandfather, a rural herbalist. During her childhood, her mother prepared mixtures of yanang leaves and turmeric for her and her brothers to treat skin irritations and insect bites.

The Sudtana team studies peer-reviewed scientific research on the properties of herbs from the family recipes, then adapts the formulas to modern requirements for safety, stability and ease of use. One product is the Scalp Revival Treatment, containing bergamot, turmeric, peppermint and sesame oil. The company says the formula was assessed in consumer testing.

Farmer partnerships

Sudtana buys organic turmeric, lemongrass and jasmine rice from Somsi, a farmer in Kalasin province in northeastern Thailand. These ingredients are used, among other things, in herbal masks and body scrubs. During the pandemic, the brand continued buying organic jasmine rice from Somsi and other farming partners and also provided aid to 500 low-income families in Bangkok.

Another farming partner, Koi, grows organic sesame for Sudtana’s hair and body oils. According to Leelahongjutha, sesame at her farm is cold-pressed, the operation does not use chemicals, and by-products are processed into fertilizer or animal feed.

During the pandemic, Soneva independently purchased and tested Sudtana products for several months before contacting the brand. Sudtana products later began to be used at Four Seasons and other luxury establishments as well.
