Amazon is buying a Starlink competitor for $11 billion

Amazon has officially announced the acquisition of satellite communications provider Globalstar to strengthen its position in the competition with Elon Musk’s Starlink project.

Amazon announced this on its website

The deal will give Jeff Bezos’s corporation access to the network, licenses, and infrastructure of the company, which was previously Apple’s technology partner in providing satellite connectivity for the iPhone.

Thanks to this acquisition, Amazon plans to accelerate the rollout of its own Amazon Leo network, which is expected to consist of approximately 3,200 satellites by 2029. Starting in 2028, the company plans to launch a device-to-device (D2D) communication system to provide mobile internet and SMS in areas without ground-based coverage. Currently, Amazon lags significantly behind Starlink, which has over 9,500 satellites and serves more than 9 million users.

Globalstar shareholders will receive $90 in cash per share or the equivalent amount in Amazon stock. The deal is scheduled to close in 2027 after regulatory approvals are obtained and the company meets certain operational conditions. While U.S. tech giants are competing for space, the Russian economy has officially entered a recession, further limiting the aggressor’s ability to develop its own high-tech projects.

The American company Amazon has acquired the startup Fauna Robotics, which specializes in the production of humanoid robots.

Earlier, we reported that Amazon Web Services suffered an outage in Dubai and temporarily suspended its services.
