Why Europe lacks its own Nvidia, Google, or Apple: an analysis of $10 billion+ startups

In the past 50 years, no European company started from scratch has reached a market capitalisation exceeding $100 billion. In contrast, several US companies founded in the same period have surpassed valuations of $1 trillion. This gap highlights differences in the growth dynamics of the technology sector and the role of young companies in each region’s economy.

The MIT analysis shows that American tech giants like Nvidia, Google, and Apple were founded purely as startups, not as results of mergers or acquisitions. The absence of similar companies in Europe points to market trends dominated by less innovative or smaller-scale enterprises, affecting the continent’s competitiveness in high-tech industries.

Given current challenges and the need for innovation, Europe should focus more on fostering homegrown technology startups. This may eventually lead to the emergence of world-class companies and strengthen the region’s position in the global market.
