Daewoo E&C signs memorandum on Karakum Canal — Korea Herald
In Seoul, South Korea, construction company Daewoo Engineering & Construction signed a memorandum of cooperation with Turkmenistan’s State Committee for Water Management on the modernization of the Karakum Canal. The document was concluded during the Korea-Turkmenistan Business Forum, Korea Herald reports.
Modernization of a canal section
According to Daewoo E&C, the memorandum establishes a framework for modernizing the lower section of the Karakum Canal, which is approximately 250 kilometers long. The company said the agreement could also open opportunities for broader cooperation in water resources and environmental projects in Turkmenistan.
Daewoo E&C Chairman Jeong Won-ju met with Turkmenistan President Serdar Berdimuhamedov during the forum. They discussed the company’s plans for additional projects in the country, and Jeong asked the Turkmen authorities for further attention and support.

Expansion of operations
Daewoo E&C entered the Turkmen market last year after securing a contract to build a mineral fertilizer plant. The company now seeks to expand its presence in the country beyond industrial facility construction, into water management and infrastructure.
Jeong also took part in a Korea-Uzbekistan business roundtable and a state dinner for the leaders of Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan. Separately, he held talks with officials and business representatives from Uzbekistan and other Central Asian countries on possible cooperation in energy, industrial facility construction, infrastructure and urban development.
Daewoo E&C employees also attended Turkmenistan Culture Day at the company’s headquarters in central Seoul. The event included performances of traditional dances and music, as well as exhibitions of handicrafts and artworks.
