Buckwheat prices in Ukraine may rise due to a reduction in planted acreage
In Ukraine, buckwheat prices are expected to rise during the 2026/27 marketing season due to limited supply and a reduction in planted area. According to analysts’ estimates, total buckwheat supply will reach 112,200 metric tons, which is nearly 30% less than the previous season’s figure and only slightly exceeds domestic consumption of 95,000 metric tons.
According to the Ministry of Agrarian Policy, the area planted with buckwheat in 2026 will decrease by nearly 18%—to 48,600 hectares, compared to 59,000 hectares last year. The gross harvest is expected to reach 62,200 metric tons, which is 12% less than last year’s result, while the average yield has fallen to 14.5 centners per hectare. Increased demand from buyers actively stockpiling for the winter is putting additional pressure on prices.
As of September 11, the average selling price of buckwheat groats set by processors had already risen by 3,000 UAH/metric ton over the week, reaching 65,000 UAH/metric ton. Andriy Kupchenko, Head of the Business Projects Department at IA “APK-Inform,” emphasized: “Given the current market conditions, price increases in this segment may continue.”
