Emma Grede urged women to talk about money — Daily Maverick
In South Africa, British entrepreneur Emma Grede, in an interview with Daily Maverick, urged women to speak more openly about money, ask for higher compensation and develop financial literacy. According to her, financial independence determines a person's ability to make their own decisions.
Grede is a founding partner of Skims, co-founder and CEO of Good American, co-founder of the sportswear brand Off Season, and a member of the board of directors of the Obama Foundation. She also hosts the Aspire with Emma Grede podcast and is the author of the book Start With Yourself.
Money and choice
The entrepreneur devoted a separate chapter of her book and an episode of her podcast, You’re Allowed to Want to Be Rich, to the subject of money. In her view, women should let go of the fear of seeming too demanding when asking for higher pay, as the alternative may be being underpaid.

Grede noted that turning down even an additional £5,000 could later result in significant financial losses over the course of a career. She urged people to think long term and consider the impact of such decisions on those who come after them.
Actions instead of declarations
Grede called financial literacy a necessity rather than an added advantage, as money affects the ability to make choices and act independently. She also spoke critically about general declarations on women's empowerment, emphasizing the need for concrete action.
The entrepreneur said that in difficult situations she seeks help from other people, has turned to therapy and completed the Hoffman Process. In her view, experience and a better understanding of oneself can make one's 40s, 50s and 60s a period of greatest fulfillment.
