How the pharmaceutical giant Novo Nordisk has become the basis of economic growth in Denmark

Denmark's gross domestic product grew by 2.3% in the third quarter of 2025, driven by the pharmaceutical industry, particularly Novo Nordisk. According to Statistics Denmark, the growth in exports of pharmaceuticals, in particular weight loss drugs, played a key role in this economic recovery. Without the significant contribution of this sector, the country's overall GDP would have grown much less.

The pharmaceutical industry remains an important engine of economic growth in Denmark, in particular due to the success of Novo Nordisk's drugs. However, despite its impressive financial performance and strong quarterly sales, the company is facing difficulties in a competitive market. In the United States, where other manufacturers are actively developing their products, Novo's market share is declining. Since the beginning of the year, the company's shares have lost 49% of their value, despite a positive financial result in the third quarter. These factors require a revision of the strategy, including a 10% reduction in the number of approved employees.

Economist Lars Christensen noted that although the company is facing internal challenges, real activity and expansion plans indicate a positive impact on the country's economy. In the absence of critical changes, Novo Nordisk is expected to continue to play a role in the growth of the Danish economy in 2025.
