Armstrong, who advised Musk on the $44bn Twitter acquisition, has become one of his closest allies. He previously served as a senior adviser in the Trump administration before departing over disagreements on fiscal policy. He replaces Mike Liberatore, who recently left xAI for OpenAI.

The appointment comes as Musk ramps up his ambitions in artificial intelligence, seeking to compete with OpenAI and Google DeepMind. xAI is reportedly preparing for a new funding round that could value the company at around $200bn, underscoring its growing influence in the AI race.
