Logistics, Prices, and the New Shopper: What Has Changed in Ukrainian Retail—Lyubov Shishman’s Experience

Logistics, Prices, and the New Shopper: What Has Changed in Ukrainian Retail—Lyubov Shishman’s Experience

Recent years have significantly changed the rules of the game for the Ukrainian retail sector. The war, labor shortages, challenging supply conditions, energy risks, and shifting consumer habits have forced businesses to rethink their traditional operating models. At the same time, the industry continues to evolve: retail chains are opening new locations, expanding their presence in the regions, and more actively integrating offline and online sales.

However, one of the main challenges remains not expansion itself, but the ability to ensure stable business operations amid constant change.

These changes are all too familiar to Lyubov Shyshman—an entrepreneur and expert in retail operations management. She worked in the retail sector in Ukraine for over ten years and today continues her entrepreneurial activities in the U.S. through Shyshman LLC.

Logistics remains one of the key issues for the industry. Ukrainian businesses have already adapted a significant portion of their supply routes to the new conditions, but transportation continues to depend on the situation at the borders, the functioning of transportation infrastructure, and security factors. As a result, diversifying suppliers, finding alternative routes, and planning purchases more accurately are becoming increasingly important for retailers.

Experience shows that under such conditions, retail efficiency depends largely on the quality of operational management. In her work, Lyubov Shishman emphasizes procurement management, inventory control, and the rapid analysis of changes in demand. This allows retailers to respond more quickly to sales fluctuations, avoid excess inventory, and at the same time maintain the necessary product assortment.

Another major challenge for the retail industry has been a labor shortage. Companies are forced not only to compete for employees but also to restructure internal processes, automate certain operations, and rethink their approaches to team organization. Under these circumstances, according to Shishman, a manager’s ability to view the business as a single system—where procurement, logistics, human resources, and sales directly influence one another—becomes particularly important.

That is why social media and collaboration with influencers continue to play a key role in the retail sector.

“Social media continues to help businesses adapt to new realities. Influencers actively use the most effective formats for engaging with consumers, creating an emotional connection between the brand and the audience through personal stories and live communication,” notes Lyubov Shishman.

The entrepreneur’s own experience confirms this conclusion: even during the pandemic, she shifted part of her sales online and began using social media as a separate sales channel, which resulted in a roughly 14% increase in sales volume.

Summing up the past few years, Lyubov Shishman is convinced that the main achievement of Ukrainian retail has not been the number of stores opened, but the ability to adapt quickly to change. It is precisely this flexibility—backed by professional management, analytics, and consumer trust—that will continue to shape the industry’s development.

The entrepreneur’s practical experience has been recognized with the national “Leader of Ukrainian Entrepreneurship” award. Today, she serves on the jury of the Ukrainian Business Award, where she evaluates companies in terms of operational efficiency and their ability to operate amid today’s challenges.
