Smilyansky accused the NBU of attempting to gain control over Ukrposhta’s supervisory board

Smilyansky accused the NBU of attempting to gain control over Ukrposhta’s supervisory board

Ihor Smilianskyi, CEO of Ukrposhta, reported pressure from the National Bank of Ukraine and the regulator’s attempts to block the establishment of Ukrposhta Bank.

According to the company’s head, the NBU imposed a fine of 255,000 hryvnias on the postal operator for failing to submit information that Smilianskyi considers a confidential matter of the shareholder. He emphasized that the regulator is demanding the provision of minutes from supervisory board meetings, which violates corporate governance principles and hinders the free discussion of strategic issues.

Smiliansky noted that such actions send a signal to the market and constitute an attempt to damage the company’s business reputation in order to prevent it from obtaining a banking license. He compared the NBU’s demands for the minutes to a situation where a prosecutor would require a lawyer to provide recordings of conversations with a client in preparation for a trial. Despite paying the fine, Ukrposhta is preparing a lawsuit to challenge the regulator’s decision. In the near future, the company plans to announce a competition for new independent members of the supervisory board to ensure its autonomy from external influence.

Earlier, Smiliansky stated that Ukrposhta is still unable to provide banking services, particularly in villages and frontline regions, due to opposition from the National Bank.

Ihor Smiliansky, CEO of Ukrposhta, got into a heated exchange with online users over criticism regarding the layoffs of employees in rural areas. He called one of the men a “moron” and a “jerk.”
