Volkswagen to face trial in France over dieselgate scandal
Volkswagen, along with French companies Renault and Stellantis, will be tried in France on charges related to the dieselgate scandal, AFP reports. The companies will be accused of deliberately misleading consumers about products that pose health risks to humans and animals, with the trial expected to begin in 2027.
The dieselgate scandal erupted in 2025 when VW was first accused in the United States of concealing harmful emissions from their diesel vehicles. Other car manufacturers were subsequently implicated and fined billions in various countries. Overall, Volkswagen has paid over €32 billion in penalties related to dieselgate.
This trial marks a significant step in holding automotive giants accountable for environmental violations and could shape future emissions regulations in the automotive industry.
