China’s factory activity hits highest level in a year in March

The manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) in China rose to 50.4 points in March, marking the highest level in the past twelve months. This uptick signals a recovery and expansion in the country’s manufacturing sector, a crucial indicator for assessing China’s economic health.

A PMI reading above 50 indicates expansion, while below 50 suggests contraction. In February, the index stood at 49, with January recording 49.3. The growth seen in March is attributed to renewed demand and the accelerated resumption of production after the Chinese New Year holiday (Spring Festival).

In the non-manufacturing sector, which includes services and construction, the index also returned to growth territory, increasing to 50.1 from 49.5 the previous month. This reflects overall improvement in business activity across China’s economy.

Experts predict China’s GDP growth for the first quarter could exceed 4.5%. However, markets remain cautious amid concerns about a global economic slowdown and potential disruptions in supply chains.

The rise in the March PMI highlights a positive momentum in China’s economic recovery following the holiday season, laying the groundwork for optimistic outlooks on the country’s near-term economic development.
