The President of the European Commission postponed her trip to Greenland due to the elections in Denmark

03 April 2026 15:02

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has postponed her visit to Greenland due to early parliamentary elections in Denmark and ongoing coalition talks. While a specific date for the trip has not yet been set, Brussels and Copenhagen are coordinating their plans. The Arctic remains a priority for the European institution. Euractiv reports this, citing informed sources.

The trip was originally scheduled for March, but Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen’s decision to call elections for March 24 changed von der Leyen’s plans. A European Commission spokesperson confirmed that the visit’s schedule is being revised but emphasized: “The Arctic remains a priority for von der Leyen.”

During the visit, the European Commission President was expected to meet with Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen and other local officials. Representatives of the Danish Prime Minister’s Office and the Greenlandic government have not yet commented on the situation.

Von der Leyen last visited Greenland in March 2024, when she and Frederiksen opened the European Commission’s office in the capital, Nuuk. At that time, a visit to Iceland—which was preparing for a summer referendum on EU membership—was also planned, but that trip was postponed as well.

Brussels and Copenhagen are currently working to set a new date for the trip as soon as possible and ensure that all planned meetings take place.

Additionally, the United Kingdom and Kuwait discussed the deployment of the British Rapid Sentry air defense system. The goal is to protect Kuwaiti and British personnel and interests in the region amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.

French President Emmanuel Macron announced the possibility of a partnership with South Korea to stabilize the situation in the Strait of Hormuz. According to him, such cooperation will only be possible after the bombing in the region ceases.
