JD founder launches yacht brand with $730 million green investment
Richard Liu, founder of Chinese e-commerce giant JD.com, has announced the launch of the yacht brand Sea Expandary. Liu is investing approximately $730 million (5 billion yuan) personally into the project, marking a significant move in sustainable maritime innovation and green technology adoption.

The company aims to produce 100% environmentally friendly yachts powered by new energy sources, incorporating artificial intelligence and robotics technologies. Prices will start from around 100,000 yuan ($14,500), making these yachts accessible to ordinary families. Sea Expandary will cover the entire value chain, from research and development to manufacturing, sales, and after-sales service.
The production base will be located in Zhuhai, with headquarters in Shenzhen, both cities in Guangdong Province. Liu emphasized that he will not engage in day-to-day operations, choosing instead to focus on JD.com’s business.
