Australia to build 30-storey affordable and social rental housing building in Perth
In Perth, Australia, the government of Western Australia will allocate more than $100 million for the construction of a 30-storey residential building for affordable and social rental housing in the city’s central business district. The building on Roe Street, next to Perth Arena, is planned to be completed by 2029, ABC News Australia reports.
174 rental apartments
The new building will include 174 one- and two-bedroom apartments. According to the state government, 139 of them will be designated for affordable rent, while another 35 will be used for social housing.
The building will be constructed near a railway line. Western Australia Housing Minister John Carey said it would feature a facade and glazing designed to reduce the impact of railway noise. He also expressed hope that the project would boost activity in central Perth.

Rental housing programme
State authorities described the building as one of 21 housing projects currently being implemented in Western Australia. Together, they are expected to provide 1,500 apartments.
Carey said the state is accelerating the expansion of its housing stock with support from the federal Housing Australia Future Fund. According to him, joint funding should make it possible to deliver more than 40 housing projects in Western Australia specifically built for long-term rental.
According to the state government, once completed, the building will be sold to a community housing operator, which will determine apartment rental rates. ABC News Australia notes that several such operators surveyed did not know about the new project at the time of publication.
