Beijing’s secret garden opens to the public for the first time in 100 years

For the first time in over a century, Beijing’s Qianlong Garden, a hidden architectural treasure inside the Forbidden City, has opened to the public. Originally built in the 18th century for Emperor Qianlong as a private retreat after his abdication, the site remained sealed for more than 100 years.

The restoration — spanning 25 years of meticulous work — was completed to mark the 100th anniversary of the Palace Museum. Every building, wall, and decorative element was carefully repaired or recreated to preserve the site’s original beauty.

Covering more than 4,000 square meters, the garden blends imperial architecture, stone sculptures, and artistic pavilions into a tranquil retreat symbolizing harmony between nature and design. The opening marks a major milestone in China’s cultural preservation efforts.
