Footballer Kylian Mbappé criticizes AI memes depicting dictators

French footballer Kylian Mbappé said he had mixed feelings about AI memes on social media that depicted him as a dictator. He said this in an interview with France Football magazine, Asharq Al-Awsat reports.

Images on social media

During the World Cup, AI-generated images of Mbappé in military clothing, on a throne, and alongside Soviet leader Joseph Stalin and other controversial leaders circulated on social media.

The footballer acknowledged that some of these jokes may be good-natured. At the same time, he stressed that comparisons with people associated with the killings and suffering of millions of people are not funny to him.

Mbappé's reaction

According to Mbappé, such posts are usually created without the intention of going too far, but they sometimes indicate a lack of political and human awareness.

He also commented on the nickname “Mobut,” used for him by France teammate Ousmane Dembélé. The nickname is a reference to former autocratic leader Mobutu Sese Seko. Mbappé noted that in Dembélé's case, he sees it as a joke between teammates, although the nickname itself, according to him, also originated on social media.
