An Argentine congresswoman said the national team is being criticized for the lack of dark-skinned players

Argentine Congresswoman Lilia Lemuan stated that the criticism directed at the national soccer team stems from the fact that it does not include any players of color. According to her, this is allegedly what caused the negative reaction during the current and previous World Cups.

Lilia Lemuán, a member of the Argentine Chamber of Deputies, explained the criticism directed at the national team following the 2026 World Cup.

“Our team is being attacked because there are no people of color on it. Everyone there is white. The hatred toward our team at this and past World Cups arose because of the absence of Black soccer players. That is precisely why people started calling us racists. There are no African Americans on the team, but there are players from families with very modest incomes, from the poorest segments of the population,” Lemoyne stated.

As a reminder, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) have classified the World Cup semifinal match between England and Argentina as a high-risk game.

Argentina could face penalties following its celebration of the victory over England.
