"Arsenal" has signed Newcastle captain Bruno Guimarães

London's Arsenal announced the signing of Brazilian midfielder and Newcastle captain Bruno Guimarães. The 28-year-old soccer player has signed a four-year contract with the reigning English champions, which includes an option to extend for one additional season.

According to Al Jazeera English, British media estimate the transfer fee at approximately 75 million pounds sterling, or about 101 million dollars. Guimaraes said that after talks with Arsenal’s sporting director Andrea Berta and head coach Mikel Arteta, he felt the need for a new challenge. He also expressed hope that the team will be able to achieve its goals this season.

The Brazilian joined Newcastle from French club Lyon in January 2022. He played 195 matches in all competitions for the English club and scored 31 goals. As team captain, Guimarães helped Newcastle win the 2025 English League Cup.

Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta noted that the new signing is capable of playing both as a defensive midfielder and as a player who operates from one penalty area to the other. With the London club, Guimaraes will compete for a spot in midfield with Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi, Mikel Merino, and team captain Martin Ødegaard.

Arsenal will kick off the new season with a home match against Coventry City, which has been promoted to the Premier League. The game is scheduled for August 21.
