Arsenal crushed Coventry 3–0 in their Premier League opener

Arsenal defeated Coventry 3-0 in the opening match of the new English Premier League season. The match took place on Friday at London’s Emirates Stadium, according to Al Jazeera English.

The home team opened the scoring in the 15th minute. Coventry defender Milan van Eijk lost the ball on the right flank, after which Riccardo Calafiori delivered a cross, and Kai Havertz scored with a low shot from inside the penalty area.

In the 23rd minute, Bukayo Saka doubled Arsenal’s lead. Declan Rice and Martin Ødegaard played the ball around, and Christos Tzolis sent a cross into the penalty area. Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth deflected the ball to Saka, who scored from close range.

Edegor sealed the final score in the 49th minute. Saka and Ben White broke through the opponent’s defense, after which Edegor’s shot from ten yards—which wasn’t perfectly struck—sailed past Rushworth’s failed attempt to make a save. After the game, Edegor told Sky Sports that the team controlled the match but could have created and capitalized on more scoring opportunities.

For Coventry, this was their first Premier League match since 2001. Frank Lampard’s team returned to the top flight after winning the Championship last season. Arsenal’s next match will be on August 31, an away game against Aston Villa.
