Basketball player Kateryna Koval left LSU due to a contract with a Russian player
Ukrainian basketball player Kateryna Koval left the LSU women’s basketball program after the team signed Russian center Anna Minaeva. According to the athlete, the arrival of the Russian player had a profound personal impact on her and forced her to reconsider her future with the team.
Kateryna Koval stated that the situation surrounding the signing of the Russian basketball player directly affected her, her family, and her loved ones.
“The timing of this situation and its profound personal impact on me, my family, and those who care about us—and who continue to suffer and fight in this war—ultimately made me question whether LSU is still the right place for me. This decision was not an easy one. While I understand and respect that roster decisions are part of college basketball, I must remain true to myself, my values, and my country,” Koval said.
Earlier, LSU coach Kim Mulkey reported that the Ukrainian athlete had left the team after one season in Baton Rouge for “personal reasons.”
The publication notes that 20-year-old Kateryna Koval is believed to have declined to continue playing for LSU specifically as a protest against the signing of Russian center Anna Minaeva.
Minaeva is 195 centimeters tall and previously played professionally for the Moscow club “MBA.”
Thus, the Ukrainian basketball player’s decision was a reaction to the addition of a Russian athlete to the LSU roster amid a full-scale war against Ukraine.
Kateryna Koval also spoke about her father, who serves in the Ukrainian army and is defending the country against Russian aggression.
“My father serves in the Ukrainian army and is extremely proud to be defending his country against Russian aggression. For me, this war is not something distant or abstract. People close to me have been killed and wounded as a result of Russian attacks, and the places where I grew up and first started playing basketball were destroyed by rocket strikes,” Kateryna Koval emphasized.
The basketball player added that she looks back positively on her time at Baton Rouge, but the signing of a Russian player made continuing her stay at LSU unacceptable to her.
According to Koval, her decision to leave the team was not an easy one, but she chose to remain true to her values and her support for Ukraine.
