Japanese boxing champion Daisuke Sugita was found dead at a police station

Japanese boxer Daisuke Sugita, who combined his athletic career with service in the police force, was found dead at his workplace. He was 37 years old.

The tragedy occurred on May 30 at a police station in Machida, which is part of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department. Sugita was found unconscious with a gunshot wound to the head. A pistol was found nearby, from which, according to the investigation, a single shot was fired.

The boxer was hospitalized in critical condition, but efforts to save him were unsuccessful.

Law enforcement is currently investigating the circumstances of his death. The primary line of inquiry is suicide.

The news came as a surprise to the sports community, as Sugita had been actively training and preparing for his next fight, scheduled for August 2026. He had his last fight on March 17, defeating Ren Kakimoto by decision.

At the amateur level, Sugita fought over 140 bouts and twice became the Japanese champion among police officers. He had been competing in professional boxing since 2018 and won the WBA South Asia and WBA Asia titles in the welterweight division, as well as the WBC Asia title in the lightweight division.

His professional record stands at 11 wins (4 by knockout) and 6 losses.
