World Games archery champion dies in a car accident in Slovakia

Slovak archer Denisa Gurban Barankova, the 2025 World Games champion, died in a traffic accident in Bratislava. She was 24 years old.

The tragedy occurred on June 21 in the Petržalka district. According to preliminary police reports, the driver of a passenger car confused the gas and brake pedals, lost control of the vehicle, and struck pedestrians. Barankova sustained severe injuries and was hospitalized, but doctors were unable to save her life.

An 11-year-old girl was also injured in the accident; she sustained serious injuries and remains under medical supervision. Law enforcement is investigating the circumstances of the accident.

Denisa Gurban Barankova represented Slovakia twice at the Olympic Games in Tokyo and Paris. The greatest achievement of her career was winning gold at the 2025 World Games in Chengdu in the recurve archery field event.
