At the 2026 FIFA World Cup, being held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, the second round of group stage matches took place. At the end of the day’s action, Uruguay let a win slip away against Cape Verde, while Egypt secured an important victory over New Zealand.

In a Group H match held in Miami, Uruguay and Cape Verde played to a 2–2 draw.

The Uruguayans scored twice late in the first half thanks to goals by Ronald Araújo and Agustín Canobbio, but their opponents managed to equalize with strikes by Pina and Varela.
