Deco explains why Barcelona chose Gordon over Rashford
In Spain, Barcelona sporting director Deco said that winger Anthony Gordon's style is better suited to the requirements of Hansi Flick's team than that of Marcus Rashford. The Catalan club did not exercise its option to buy Rashford after a 12-month loan and signed Gordon from Newcastle.
As MyJoyOnline reports, Rashford scored 14 goals for Barcelona in all competitions last season. The team then won La Liga and the Copa del Rey. After the loan ended, the club had the opportunity to buy the 28-year-old Manchester United forward for €35 million, or £30.3 million, but did not extend his stay with the team, and the player returned to Old Trafford.
Why Gordon was chosen
Deco thanked Rashford for his contribution last season but noted that Barcelona's playing concept is more closely aligned with Gordon's characteristics. According to him, when Raphinha did not play, the team lacked energy, and Gordon can help solve this problem.

The sporting director also said that Barcelona considered many wingers because the team needed greater intensity. According to Deco, Flick clearly identified the type of player he wanted in the squad, after which the club began working on the transfer.
The transfer and first results
Gordon joined Barcelona from Newcastle for more than €80 million, or £69.3 million. He said that he had believed he could play for the Catalan club since the age of three. The English footballer has already played five matches for the team and provided four assists.
After four La Liga rounds, Barcelona have recorded four wins, scoring 17 goals and conceding two.
