Two soccer fans will be paid $50,000 to watch every match of the 2026 World Cup
Two soccer fans from the U.S. have landed a unique job in which they will watch all the matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup from inside a glass cube in Times Square and earn $50,000 each for doing so.
Austin Franklin and Kevin Akoto have earned the official title of “World Cup Chief Observers.”
This unusual job opening was created by Fox One, which selected this pair of winners from among thousands of applicants.
To secure this position, applicants had to record a short video and prove that they are the country’s most devoted fans.
The contest organizers noted a huge amount of interest in the project, which is why they decided to hire two candidates instead of just one.
Both winners are already popular bloggers and have an audience of thousands on the social media platform TikTok.
Throughout the summer, the men will live in a specially built transparent “viewing cube,” where they will broadcast all 104 matches of the World Cup.
In total, they will spend at least 12,600 minutes in front of the screens, not counting stoppage time and post-match penalty shootouts.
In addition to simply watching the games, the men will actively create unique content for social media.
Austin and Kevin will comment on the action on the field, share their own live reactions, and showcase the crowd’s response in real time.
The winners of the selection process couldn’t contain their joy at signing the contracts and called this experience a true fairy tale. They are fully prepared for a long soccer marathon in the heart of New York City.
“It still feels pretty surreal. The opportunity to watch every World Cup match and share these moments with fans from all over the world from Times Square is a dream. I’m really excited to be able to share every moment with the fans,” Austin Franklin admitted.
