Messi tops the list of all-time leading scorers in World Cup history

After scoring a hat trick in the match against Algeria on June 17, Argentina captain Lionel Messi brought his World Cup goal tally to 16. This allowed him to take first place in the all-time World Cup scoring rankings.

Following his goals against Algeria, Messi now has 16 goals across all World Cups. He shares first place on the all-time World Cup scoring list with Germany’s Miroslav Klose (16).

The 38-year-old Messi has been playing for the North American MLS club Inter Miami since 2023. The Argentine also played for France’s Paris Saint-Germain and Spain’s Barcelona, with whom he won the Champions League four times.

Messi is a World Cup champion (2022), a World Cup silver medalist (2014), an Olympic champion (2008), and a two-time Copa América champion (2021, 2024).

As a reminder, FIFA may change the protocol for the 2026 World Cup final for Trump’s sake.

Seven young basketball players have died in Brazil.
