Joshua made an unexpected announcement regarding the end of his career

Former heavyweight world champion Anthony Joshua has spoken openly for the first time about retiring. The British boxer said he plans to continue competing for about three more years and will finally leave the professional ring after turning 40.

One of the most famous boxers of our time, Anthony Joshua has decided on his future in the sport. The Briton admitted that he does not intend to compete indefinitely and already has a target date for when he will hang up his gloves.

According to the athlete, he will turn 37 in October, so he sees about three more years of active competition ahead of him. “I’ll be 37 in October, so I only have three years left. Time will fly by. Of course, it will be tough, but I’m confident I’m resilient enough to handle it. Why not? I’ve become more mature,” Joshua said.

The Briton doesn’t hide the fact that age is taking its toll, but he believes that experience and the right approach to training allow him to remain among the world’s strongest boxers.

The path from rookie to champion

Joshua began his professional career in the fall of 2013. He had his first fight in October of that year against Italian Emanuele Leo and won by knockout in the very first round.

Since then, the British boxer has gone from a promising newcomer to one of the leading figures in world boxing. He has held heavyweight championship belts and has repeatedly topped the rankings of the world’s best boxers. Over the course of his career, Joshua has scored dozens of spectacular victories and fought in many major bouts that have drawn millions of viewers worldwide.

Who was able to defeat Joshua

Despite his status as one of the strongest heavyweight boxers of his generation, the British fighter’s career was not without its challenges. Throughout his career, he suffered only a few defeats.

In June 2019, Joshua suffered a sensational loss to American Andy Ruiz Jr., losing his championship titles. He later lost twice to Ukrainian Oleksandr Usyk—in September 2021 and August 2022. The British boxer suffered another defeat in September 2024, when he lost to his compatriot Daniel Dubois.

The last fight ended with a spectacular knockout

Joshua last stepped into the ring in December 2025. His opponent was American entertainer and boxer Jake Paul.

The bout lasted six rounds and ended early. The Brit knocked out his opponent, once again reminding everyone that he remains one of the most dangerous heavyweight boxers. So far, Joshua hasn’t named any specific opponents for the coming years, but his words make it clear: the final stage of his career has already begun. There are still a few big fights ahead, after which one of the most successful British boxers of our time plans to call it quits in professional sports. ESPN reports on this.
