The FIE has allowed Russia and Belarus to compete with their flags and national anthems
The International Fencing Federation (FIE) has decided to completely lift restrictions on athletes from Russia and Belarus. Starting with the 2026 World Championships, they will be able to compete under their own flags, in their national uniforms, and with their national anthems played. This applies to both athletes and official team representatives.
The International Fencing Federation has announced significant changes regarding the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes in international tournaments. According to the decision of the Executive Committee, all current restrictions will be lifted starting with the 2026 World Championships for adults, which will take place in Hong Kong.
Previously, representatives of Russia and Belarus could only participate in some competitions under a neutral status or were barred from certain events altogether. Now the situation is changing dramatically.
The federation’s statement explicitly states that athletes holding Russian and Belarusian passports will once again compete as representatives of their respective countries.
The FIE statement reads: “Starting with the 2026 FIE World Fencing Championships in Hong Kong, all protective measures will be lifted, and athletes and officials holding Belarusian or Russian passports will be allowed to participate in all FIE individual and team competitions under their national abbreviations, in national uniforms, with flags and national anthems.”
In effect, this means a full return to the format that existed prior to the imposition of sports sanctions. Russian and Belarusian teams will be able to participate in both team and individual disciplines without any additional restrictions.
This applies not only to the World Championships. The federation clarified that the new rules will apply to all individual and team competitions held under the auspices of the FIE.
Thus, Russian and Belarusian fencers will return to the international calendar on the same terms as representatives of other countries. This also applies to coaches, official delegations, and representatives of national federations.
After the start of the full-scale war, most international sports federations imposed various restrictions on the participation of athletes from Russia and Belarus. Some organizations allowed them to compete only under a neutral flag, while others barred representatives of these countries from tournaments altogether.
This is precisely why the FIE’s decision has already drawn the attention of the sports community. Fencing has become one of the first major Olympic sports where full participation by Russian and Belarusian athletes under their national flags is effectively being restored. It is expected that this decision will be actively discussed in the near future by both sports federations and national Olympic committees in various countries.
The first major tournament under the new rules will be the 2026 World Fencing Championships in Hong Kong. It is there that Russian and Belarusian athletes will be able to compete under their national flags for the first time after a long period of restrictions.
Reactions from individual national federations and athletes to this decision continue to come in. It is expected that the topic of the return of Russian and Belarusian athletes to international sports will remain one of the most discussed in the global sports community for a long time to come. This was reported by the organization’s press service.
